Cosmic Serpent

Can’t Do Tomorrow Festival, 2020

The Cosmic Serpent. She is the creative life force that flows through us, connecting us all. I feel her most when I am most alive; when I’m dancing, when I’m creating, when I’m laughing, when I’m loving and when I am silent. This installation is my largest to date, spanning over 3 levels of The Facility heritage building in Kensington. It was both the most challenging and the most meaningful piece I have ever made. I spoke often with my friend James about bringing the cosmic serpent to life in a sculpture but I had no idea how I was going to go about making such a piece, how I would even begin to capture this feeling in the physical form. When I began this installation 2 months ago, I couldn’t have told you what is was going to look like. A little overwhelmed by the size of the space, I decided I was best to just start by making shapes and allow the piece to reveal itself naturally. It was a week before the festival opened where I had this incredible moment of realisation. I had subconsciously created the cosmic serpent by just allowing it to create itself. I can’t describe what an incredibly beautiful and sincere moment that was for me. The day I finished the piece, James left this world. This one is for you my friend. You are the cosmic serpent. Your laughter and light will live on in our hearts forever.
